Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Financials, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Technology and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.05% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.69%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 6.43% or 11.14 points to trade at 184.30 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 3.08% or 3.53 points to end at 118.00 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 2.59% or 1.08 points to 42.71 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.72% or 2.83 points to trade at 101.28 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 2.38% or 7.27 points to end at 298.08 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) shed 2.09% or 2.48 points to 116.05.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 41.10% to 16.72, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which was up 16.20% to settle at 39.10 and Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which gained 13.73% to close at 32.38.
The worst performers were DR Horton Inc (NYSE:DHI) which was down 5.45% to 53.58 in late trade, Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) which lost 5.09% to settle at 93.80 and Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was down 4.99% to 71.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Titan Medical Inc (NASDAQ:TMDI) which rose 467.07% to 1.5700, Cinedigm Corp (NASDAQ:CIDM) which was up 177.10% to settle at 3.6300 and Vislink Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:VISL) which gained 168.24% to close at 1.1400.
The worst performers were FSD Pharma Inc Class B (NASDAQ:HUGE) which was down 28.96% to 5.25 in late trade, Cassava Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:SAVA) which lost 22.22% to settle at 2.66 and Liquid Media Group Ltd (NASDAQ:YVR) which was down 19.15% to 1.520 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1598 to 1279 and 59 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1430 rose and 1249 declined, while 62 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.58% to 25.81.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.93% or 15.85 to $1720.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.05% or 0.02 to hit $37.31 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.13% or 0.05 to trade at $39.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.1337, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 109.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.52% at 96.757.
