Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials, Industrials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.21%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.95% or 2.33 points to trade at 81.30 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 2.58% or 3.57 points to end at 141.87 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 2.43% or 3.05 points to 128.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 0.81% or 0.42 points to trade at 51.45 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 0.76% or 0.34 points to end at 44.43 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 0.61% or 1.00 points to 163.71.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Transdigm Group Incorporated (NYSE:TDG) which rose 13.67% to 524.39, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which was up 7.96% to settle at 124.56 and Zoetis Inc (NYSE:ZTS) which gained 7.64% to close at 121.17.
The worst performers were International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 15.95% to 118.91 in late trade, Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which lost 6.69% to settle at 22.02 and Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 5.94% to 18.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were EverQuote Inc Class A (NASDAQ:EVER) which rose 49.24% to 19.70, China Techfaith Wireless Communication Technology Ltd (NASDAQ:CNTF) which was up 30.30% to settle at 0.4300 and Lonestar Resources Ltd (NASDAQ:LONE) which gained 28.02% to close at 2.97.
The worst performers were Avid Technology Inc (NASDAQ:AVID) which was down 36.67% to 6.13 in late trade, GreenSky LLC (NASDAQ:GSKY) which lost 34.39% to settle at 6.81 and iPic Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:IPIC) which was down 28.92% to 0.5900 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2033 to 957 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1676 rose and 987 declined, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 17.97% to 20.17.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.67% or 9.95 to $1486.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.19% or 1.20 to hit $53.49 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.26% or 0.15 to trade at $58.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1203, while USD/JPY fell 0.03% to 106.44.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 97.400.
