Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the IT, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.42%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ), which rose 6.14% or 2.20 points to trade at 38.02 at the close. Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS) added 6.03% or 0.60 points to end at 10.55 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR) was up 6.00% or 0.55 points to 9.72 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TSX:WTE), which lost 6.67% or 1.76 points to trade at 24.62 in late trade. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 3.84% or 0.41 points to end at 10.27 and Tilray Inc (TSX:TLRY) shed 1.75% or 0.05 points to 2.81.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 729 to 233 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.43% to 12.08.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.09% or 25.20 to $2,333.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.61% or 0.48 to hit $78.59 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.54% or 0.45 to trade at $83.41 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.04% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 104.98.
