Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Materials, Consumer Discretionary and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.11%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD), which rose 7.20% or 0.250 points to trade at 3.720 at the close. Aimia Inc (TO:AIM) added 5.16% or 0.44 points to end at 8.97 and B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) was up 4.81% or 0.190 points to 4.140 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cameco Corp (TO:CCO), which lost 11.29% or 1.87 points to trade at 14.70 in late trade. Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC) declined 2.55% or 0.45 points to end at 17.20 and Toromont Industries Ltd . (TO:TIH) shed 2.06% or 0.87 points to 41.28.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 704 to 436 and 142 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.17% to 13.31.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.04% or 0.45 to $1210.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.17% or 0.62 to hit $53.43 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 1.51% or 0.84 to trade at $56.42 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.09% to 0.7667, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.7117.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 99.66.
