Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, IT and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.52% to hit a new 6-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF), which rose 5.41% or 0.39 points to trade at 7.60 at the close. Kelt Exploration Ltd. (TO:KEL) added 4.99% or 0.230 points to end at 4.840 and Nevsun Resources Ltd . (TO:NSU) was up 3.77% or 0.160 points to 4.400 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR), which lost 9.30% or 3.77 points to trade at 36.75 in late trade. Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU) declined 2.51% or 0.090 points to end at 3.500 and Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG) shed 2.42% or 0.16 points to 6.46.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 645 to 473 and 161 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.59% to 12.88.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.13% or 1.60 to $1213.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.08% or 0.04 to hit $48.97 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.24% or 0.12 to trade at $49.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.21% to 0.7631, while CAD/EUR rose 0.13% to 0.6844.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.16% at 95.57.
