Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Utilities, Consumer Staples and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Baytex Energy Corp (TSX:BTE), which rose 14.93% or 0.050 points to trade at 0.385 at the close. Frontera Energy Corp (TSX:FEC) added 13.04% or 0.51 points to end at 4.42 and Enerplus Corporation (TSX:ERF) was up 10.64% or 0.30 points to 3.12 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Alaris Royalty Corp . (TSX:AD), which lost 7.75% or 0.71 points to trade at 8.45 in late trade. Atco Ltd (TSX:ACOx) declined 4.52% or 1.75 points to end at 37.00 and Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TSX:WTE) shed 4.04% or 0.59 points to 14.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 652 to 408 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.67% or 11.70 to $1750.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 23.51% or 3.24 to hit $17.02 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 7.56% or 1.54 to trade at $21.91 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.67% to 0.7107, while CAD/EUR rose 1.13% to 0.6596.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 100.627.
