Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Industrials, Utilities and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.51%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which rose 5.46% or 0.56 points to trade at 10.81 at the close. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) added 4.87% or 1.90 points to end at 40.94 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) was up 4.17% or 0.96 points to 23.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Mullen Group Ltd . (TSX:MTL), which lost 9.07% or 1.33 points to trade at 13.34 in late trade. Winpak Ltd. (TSX:WPK) declined 7.09% or 3.26 points to end at 42.74 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TSX:HCG) shed 5.71% or 1.56 points to 25.74.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 567 to 425 and 102 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.64% to 26.17 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.17% or 2.85 to $1,631.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.50% or 0.42 to hit $84.94 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.26% or 0.24 to trade at $92.65 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.08% to 0.74.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 112.80.
