Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the IT, Materials and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 2.29% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Waste Connections Inc (TSX:WCN), which rose 2.27% or 4.72 points to trade at 212.36 at the close. International Petroleum Corp (TSX:IPCO) added 1.82% or 0.27 points to end at 15.10 and Trisura Group Ltd (TSX:TSU) was up 1.47% or 0.58 points to 39.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM), which lost 53.52% or 7.00 points to trade at 6.08 in late trade. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) declined 12.54% or 15.04 points to end at 104.85 and Centerra Gold Inc (TSX:CG) shed 10.10% or 0.69 points to 6.14.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 761 to 200 and 95 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 16.18% to 12.78.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.33% or 27.00 to $2,006.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.11% or 0.85 to hit $77.77 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.73% or 0.60 to trade at $82.60 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.83% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.26% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.69% at 104.76.
