Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Materials and REITs sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.06%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC), which rose 3.73% or 0.40 points to trade at 11.11 at the close. Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) added 3.13% or 0.45 points to end at 14.84 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) was up 3.07% or 0.18 points to 6.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Klondex Mines Ltd. (TO:KDX), which lost 3.88% or 0.170 points to trade at 4.210 in late trade. Pan American Silver Corp (TO:PAAS) declined 3.63% or 0.75 points to end at 19.92 and Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd (TO:KL) shed 3.54% or 0.430 points to 11.700.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 595 to 479 and 140 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.51% to 12.84.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.12% or 1.44 to $1217.66 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.23% or 0.56 to hit $46.05 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.38% or 0.66 to trade at $48.40 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.24% to 0.7857, while CAD/EUR rose 0.33% to 0.6893.
The US Dollar Index Futures was unchanged 0.00% at 95.55.
