* The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX .GSPTSE rose 126.05 points, or 0.79 percent, to 16,048.66.
* The biggest contributor to the TSX gain was Suncor SU.TO with 11.69 net index points. Energy provided the top sector boost.
* Leading the index were MEG Energy Corp MEG.TO , up 7.3 percent, Ivanhoe Mines Ltd IVN.TO , up 5.8 percent, and Birchcliff Energy Ltd BIR.TO , higher by 5.1 percent.
* Lagging shares were Laurentian Bank of Canada LB.TO , down 4.7 percent, Alacer Gold Corp ASR.TO , down 3.6 percent, and Colliers International Group Inc CIGI.TO , lower by 2.3 percent.
* On the TSX 185 issues advanced and 58 declined as a 3.2-to-1 ratio favored advancers. There were 12 new highs and 2 new lows, with total volume of 180.8 million shares.
* The most heavily traded shares by volume were Bombardier Inc BBDb.TO , Baytex Energy Corp BTE.TO and Cenovus Energy Inc CVE.TO .
* The TSX's energy group .SPTTEN rose 4.06 points, or 2.05 percent, while the financials sector .SPTTFS climbed 1.31 points, or 0.44 percent.
* West Texas Intermediate crude futures CLc1 rose 2.46 percent, or $1.64, to $68.37 a barrel. Brent crude LCOc1 rose 3.05 percent, or $2.3, to $77.69 O/R
* The TSX is off 1 percent for the year.
