Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.05%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.32%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 2.26% or 1.82 points to trade at 82.26 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 2.22% or 2.92 points to end at 134.59 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 1.90% or 3.85 points to 206.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which added 0.18% or 0.28 points to trade at 156.13 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 0.19% or 0.43 points to end at 231.09 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) gained 0.23% or 0.27 points to 114.33.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Foot Locker Inc (NYSE:FL) which rose 4.94% to 35.68, TechnipFMC PLC (NYSE:FTI) which was up 3.94% to settle at 24.01 and DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) which gained 3.93% to close at 32.26.
The worst performers were Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM) which was down 4.27% to 77.75 in late trade, L Brands Inc (NYSE:LB) which lost 3.48% to settle at 16.92 and Gap Inc (NYSE:GPS) which was down 3.22% to 16.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Hudson Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:HDSN) which rose 99.45% to 0.618, Appliance Recycling Centers of America Inc (NASDAQ:ARCI) which was up 72.86% to settle at 6.0500 and Arcadia Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:RKDA) which gained 52.24% to close at 9.850.
The worst performers were Constellation Alpha Capital Corp (NASDAQ:CNAC) which was down 43.56% to 4.60 in late trade, Fuwei Films Holdings Co Ltd (NASDAQ:FFHL) which lost 24.44% to settle at 4.7300 and Polarityte Inc (NASDAQ:PTE) which was down 21.19% to 3.8300 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1962 to 1029 and 27 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1762 rose and 898 declined, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.77% to 19.32.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.05% or 0.70 to $1536.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.68% or 0.37 to hit $53.80 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $58.29 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.04% to 1.1104, while USD/JPY fell 0.01% to 106.11.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.44% at 97.960.
