Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.15%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.02%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.68%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.82% or 2.89 points to trade at 161.42 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 0.24% or 0.43 points to end at 178.81 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.19% or 0.54 points to 290.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 3.52% or 4.05 points to trade at 111.12 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 2.79% or 3.51 points to end at 122.23 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 2.74% or 0.91 points to 32.25.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which rose 4.53% to 95.21, APA Corporation (NASDAQ:APA) which was up 4.15% to settle at 42.20 and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) which gained 4.07% to close at 70.50.
The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 6.19% to 6.97 in late trade, SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which lost 5.96% to settle at 220.27 and Generac Holdings Inc (NYSE:GNRC) which was down 5.60% to 168.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Green Giant Inc (NASDAQ:GGE) which rose 168.57% to 1.88, Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) which was up 95.45% to settle at 24.49 and InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which gained 83.03% to close at 7.98.
The worst performers were Jowell Global Ltd. (NASDAQ:JWEL) which was down 45.36% to 1.53 in late trade, Cyclerion Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CYCN) which lost 37.57% to settle at 0.59 and Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 35.22% to 6.40 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2121 to 997 and 130 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2096 fell and 1653 advanced, while 252 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.90% to 30.52.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.07% or 1.20 to $1,722.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 1.30% or 1.14 to hit $88.90 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 1.59% or 1.48 to trade at $94.85 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.87% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.34% to 145.13.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 1.03% at 112.16.
