Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.79% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.65%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 1.96%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which fell 0.11% or 0.13 points to trade at 118.27 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) fell 0.43% or 0.86 points to end at 198.04 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 0.49% or 0.28 points to 56.63 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 3.87% or 14.37 points to trade at 357.23 in late trade. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) declined 3.40% or 4.76 points to end at 135.44 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) shed 2.70% or 5.62 points to 202.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American International Group Inc (NYSE:AIG) which rose 6.77% to 50.30, Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which was up 5.42% to settle at 66.71 and Everest Re Group Ltd (NYSE:RE) which gained 3.83% to close at 246.89.
The worst performers were Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 23.81% to 21.53 in late trade, Mosaic Co (NYSE:MOS) which lost 7.99% to settle at 23.25 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which was down 6.34% to 322.40 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cohu Inc (NASDAQ:COHU) which rose 24.18% to 19.21, ATA Inc (NASDAQ:ATAI) which was up 22.83% to settle at 2.260 and SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which gained 22.70% to close at 53.84.
The worst performers were Catalyst Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CPRX) which was down 39.61% to 3.690 in late trade, Intersect ENT Inc (NASDAQ:XENT) which lost 24.28% to settle at 25.10 and Mylan NV (NASDAQ:MYL) which was down 23.81% to 21.53 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2420 to 571 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2029 fell and 621 advanced, while 75 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 25.13% to 19.32 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.14% or 1.85 to $1285.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.30% or 0.81 to hit $61.44 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.07% or 0.05 to trade at $69.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.06% to 1.1197, while USD/JPY rose 0.00% to 110.25.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 97.310.
