Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Financials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Sandstorm Gold Ltd . (TSX:SSL), which rose 8.62% or 0.57 points to trade at 7.18 at the close. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) added 7.73% or 0.51 points to end at 7.11 and Filo Mining Corp (TSX:FIL) was up 5.09% or 1.15 points to 23.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP (TSX:BEP_u), which lost 5.89% or 2.49 points to trade at 39.79 in late trade. Enghouse Systems Ltd (TSX:ENGH) declined 5.62% or 2.09 points to end at 35.11 and Converge Technology Solutions Corp (TSX:CTS) shed 4.69% or 0.16 points to 3.25.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 590 to 401 and 99 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.11% to 11.59 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.67% or 13.25 to $1,956.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 3.01% or 2.02 to hit $69.14 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 3.03% or 2.18 to trade at $74.02 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.41% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.10% to 0.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 102.86.
