Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the IT, Industrials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were goeasy Ltd (TSX:GSY), which rose 8.01% or 12.59 points to trade at 169.80 at the close. Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC) added 7.80% or 0.44 points to end at 6.08 and Intact Financial Corporation (TSX:IFC) was up 7.21% or 15.03 points to 223.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included CAE Inc. (TSX:CAE), which lost 9.80% or 2.78 points to trade at 25.60 in late trade. New Gold Inc (TSX:NGD) declined 4.35% or 0.07 points to end at 1.54 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TSX:BIR) shed 2.82% or 0.14 points to 4.82.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 603 to 322 and 117 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 12.05% to 11.24.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.18% or 3.70 to $2,003.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.64% or 1.28 to hit $76.59 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.50% or 1.24 to trade at $81.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 0.74, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.03% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 104.62.
