Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which rose 11.38% or 1.31 points to trade at 12.82 at the close. Turquoise Hill Resources Ltd. (TO:TRQ) added 8.37% or 0.200 points to end at 2.590 and Stars Group Inc (TO:TSGI) was up 7.54% or 1.70 points to 24.24 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC), which lost 5.26% or 0.43 points to trade at 7.74 in late trade. Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd. (TO:AAV) declined 2.21% or 0.070 points to end at 3.100 and Shopify Inc (TO:SHOP) shed 2.04% or 3.650 points to 175.690.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 839 to 299 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 3.10% to 18.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.42% or 5.10 to $1226.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 2.00% or 1.07 to hit $54.50 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 1.39% or 0.87 to trade at $63.40 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.49% to 0.7552, while CAD/EUR rose 0.39% to 0.6634.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 96.615.
