Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Westshore Terminals Investment Corp (TO:WTE), which rose 13.66% or 2.88 points to trade at 23.97 at the close. Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) added 8.55% or 0.26 points to end at 3.30 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was up 7.99% or 1.08 points to 14.59 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Klondex Mines Ltd. (TO:KDX), which lost 4.63% or 0.190 points to trade at 3.910 in late trade. B2Gold Corp (TO:BTO) declined 3.57% or 0.120 points to end at 3.240 and Exchange Income Corporation (TO:EIF) shed 3.07% or 0.830 points to 26.220.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 706 to 392 and 145 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 8.73% to 13.17.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.29% or 3.64 to $1250.66 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 3.65% or 1.69 to hit $48.03 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 3.52% or 1.71 to trade at $50.31 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.05% to 0.7998, while CAD/EUR fell 0.04% to 0.6863.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.12% at 93.93.
