Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ECN Capital Corp (TSX:ECN), which rose 8.03% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.23 at the close. Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) added 6.89% or 4.60 points to end at 71.39 and Tricon Capital Group Inc (TSX:TCN) was up 5.26% or 0.61 points to 12.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Canada Goose Holdings Inc (TSX:GOOS), which lost 23.66% or 7.75 points to trade at 25.00 in late trade. Precision Drilling Corporation (TSX:PD) declined 7.82% or 8.12 points to end at 95.75 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) shed 6.81% or 2.09 points to 28.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 522 to 470 and 116 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 12.63% to 13.47.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.85% or 16.50 to $1,926.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.76% or 0.58 to hit $75.83 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.93% or 0.77 to trade at $82.07 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.18% to 0.75, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.54% to 0.69.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.50% at 101.53.
