Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.78%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were New Flyer Industries Inc (TO:NFI), which rose 5.90% or 1.97 points to trade at 35.37 at the close. GENIVAR Inc . (TO:WSP) added 3.87% or 1.47 points to end at 39.50 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was up 3.74% or 1.32 points to 36.62 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb), which lost 7.25% or 0.10 points to trade at 1.28 in late trade. Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP) declined 6.80% or 0.17 points to end at 2.33 and Birchcliff Energy Ltd . (TO:BIR) shed 6.63% or 0.32 points to 4.51.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 719 to 538 and 332 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.76% to 18.31.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.49% or 6.00 to $1217.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 3.34% or 1.23 to hit $35.56 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.82% or 1.09 to trade at $37.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.52% to 0.7644, while CAD/EUR fell 0.47% to 0.6712.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.02% at 94.56.
