Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.84%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Boyd Group Income Fund (TO:BYD_u), which rose 11.52% or 7.23 points to trade at 70.00 at the close. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) added 6.54% or 2.71 points to end at 44.16 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 4.37% or 9.98 points to 238.19 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amaya Inc (TO:AYA), which lost 20.57% or 3.82 points to trade at 14.75 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) declined 16.32% or 1.35 points to end at 6.92 and Teck Resources Ltd (TO:TCKb) shed 13.38% or 1.49 points to 9.65.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 807 to 470 and 300 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.81% to 18.71.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 2.18% or 27.20 to $1221.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 4.03% or 1.67 to hit $39.78 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 3.06% or 1.28 to trade at $40.51 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.24% to 0.7569, while CAD/EUR fell 0.98% to 0.6768.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.41% at 96.06.
