Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Metals, Auto and Public Sector Undertakings sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 lost 0.85% to hit a new 3-month low, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.77%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (NS:ZEE), which rose 2.90% or 9.05 points to trade at 327.90 at the close. Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL) added 2.76% or 13.80 points to end at 518.30 and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (NS:HLL) was up 1.89% or 32.90 points to 1777.25 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd (NS:INBF), which lost 13.40% or 68.90 points to trade at 445.40 in late trade. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (NS:MAHM) declined 5.92% or 32.55 points to end at 518.30 and Tata Steel Ltd (NS:TISC) shed 5.88% or 23.60 points to 381.90.
The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (BO:HLL) which rose 1.95% to 1779.00, Yes Bank Ltd (BO:YESB) which was up 1.70% to settle at 86.85 and Hero MotoCorp Ltd (BO:HROM) which gained 1.54% to close at 2502.95.
The worst performers were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which was down 5.62% to 518.45 in late trade, Tata Motors Ltd DVR (BO:TAMdv) which lost 5.50% to settle at 55.00 and Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC) which was down 4.75% to 381.80 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 835 to 725 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1314 fell and 1062 advanced, while 151 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.
The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 3.85% to 16.7400 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 1.17% or 17.35 to $1501.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.21% or 0.11 to hit $53.52 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.21 to trade at $58.73 a barrel.
USD/INR was down 0.21% to 70.882, while EUR/INR fell 0.33% to 79.2750.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.09% at 97.502.
