Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.64% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 3.61% or 3.48 points to trade at 99.81 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 3.24% or 4.70 points to end at 149.60 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 3.02% or 6.29 points to 214.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO), which lost 1.29% or 0.80 points to trade at 61.21 in late trade. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) declined 1.24% or 0.46 points to end at 36.66 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) shed 0.90% or 1.32 points to 144.81.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 9.71% to 16.83, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which was up 7.52% to settle at 51.30 and Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp Class A (NASDAQ:CTSH) which gained 5.85% to close at 65.10.
The worst performers were Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which was down 5.95% to 232.25 in late trade, Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which lost 5.14% to settle at 82.17 and Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which was down 5.05% to 193.75 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Arrival Vault USA Inc (NASDAQ:ARVL) which rose 100.00% to 0.54, Moxian Inc (NASDAQ:MOXC) which was up 73.32% to settle at 1.04 and Akerna Corp (NASDAQ:KERN) which gained 66.67% to close at 1.65.
The worst performers were Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ORMP) which was down 76.46% to 2.54 in late trade, Atlis Motor Vehicles Inc (NASDAQ:AMV) which lost 35.32% to settle at 6.52 and Universe Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:UPC) which was down 25.30% to 0.90 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2364 to 722 and 95 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2629 rose and 1064 declined, while 185 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.72% to 18.83 a new 6-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.17% or 22.05 to $1,900.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.20% or 0.93 to hit $78.34 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.50% or 1.24 to trade at $83.91 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.91% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 2.43% to 129.24.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.94% at 101.96.
