Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.85%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 1.74%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 3.43% or 1.15 points to trade at 34.70 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 2.18% or 3.93 points to end at 184.12 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 2.16% or 2.15 points to 101.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 0.16% or 0.25 points to trade at 159.96 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 0.10% or 0.06 points to end at 60.50 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 0.02% or 0.07 points to 283.62.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 7.69% to 257.18, Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which was up 4.75% to settle at 47.81 and Insulet Corporation (NASDAQ:PODD) which gained 4.56% to close at 189.48.
The worst performers were PACCAR Inc (NASDAQ:PCAR) which was down 2.72% to 82.86 in late trade, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE:NSC) which lost 1.63% to settle at 207.76 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 1.25% to 37.13 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Axcella Health Inc (NASDAQ:AXLA) which rose 298.94% to 0.45, Tivic Health Systems Inc (NASDAQ:TIVC) which was up 53.61% to settle at 2.98 and Taysha Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:TSHA) which gained 42.02% to close at 3.38.
The worst performers were TD Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:GLG) which was down 72.34% to 0.30 in late trade, VinFast Auto (NASDAQ:VFS) which lost 43.84% to settle at 46.25 and Jayud Global Logistics Ltd (NASDAQ:JYD) which was down 27.27% to 2.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2419 to 526 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2466 rose and 1039 declined, while 113 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.24% to 14.44.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.97% or 18.85 to $1,965.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.36% or 1.09 to hit $81.19 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 1.18% or 0.99 to trade at $84.86 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.62% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 145.79.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.60% at 103.37.
