Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Utilities, Telecoms and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.10%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE), which rose 1.17% or 0.49 points to trade at 42.30 at the close. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) added 1.09% or 0.69 points to end at 63.77 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 0.93% or 1.27 points to 138.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 2.76% or 3.12 points to trade at 110.00 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 1.49% or 2.01 points to end at 132.93 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.98% or 0.57 points to 57.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 11.83% to 26.00, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 4.00% to settle at 175.71 and DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc (NYSE:DVA) which gained 3.53% to close at 53.91.
The worst performers were Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which was down 4.42% to 57.92 in late trade, JB Hunt Transport Services Inc (NASDAQ:JBHT) which lost 3.49% to settle at 100.50 and Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ:FITB) which was down 3.27% to 27.82 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Shineco Inc (NASDAQ:TYHT) which rose 84.82% to 1.22, Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:SRNE) which was up 39.64% to settle at 3.84 and Vaxart Inc (NASDAQ:VXRT) which gained 39.29% to close at 2.340.
The worst performers were Approach Resources Inc (NASDAQ:AREX) which was down 29.16% to 0.7651 in late trade, Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which lost 23.70% to settle at 0.355 and resTORbio Inc (NASDAQ:TORC) which was down 22.87% to 6.98 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1763 to 1230 and 104 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1516 fell and 1114 advanced, while 90 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.51% to 13.56.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.38% or 4.95 to $1306.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 0.40% or 0.24 to hit $59.14 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.04% or 0.03 to trade at $67.51 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.16% to 1.1355, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 111.39.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.16% at 95.830.
