Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Industrials, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.38%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.30%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.44%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 1.12% or 2.73 points to trade at 245.88 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 1.12% or 2.01 points to end at 180.91 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.86% or 1.56 points to 184.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 6.15% or 24.60 points to trade at 375.41 in late trade. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) declined 1.06% or 1.34 points to end at 124.67 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 0.63% or 1.30 points to 205.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Range Resources Corporation (NYSE:RRC) which rose 5.48% to 10.39, EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which was up 5.08% to settle at 19.65 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which gained 4.73% to close at 2.880.
The worst performers were F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which was down 7.67% to 149.65 in late trade, Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) which lost 6.15% to settle at 375.41 and American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 3.53% to 30.92 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were VivoPower International PLC (NASDAQ:VVPR) which rose 126.50% to 2.65, Aileron Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ALRN) which was up 51.43% to settle at 2.12 and ENDRA Life Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:NDRA) which gained 38.95% to close at 2.640.
The worst performers were Zafgen Inc (NASDAQ:ZFGN) which was down 37.17% to 2.89 in late trade, Castor Maritime Inc (NASDAQ:CTRM) which lost 30.00% to settle at 6.3000 and BOS Better Online Solutions (NASDAQ:BOSC) which was down 20.30% to 3.140 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1746 to 1229 and 126 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1340 fell and 1262 advanced, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.91% to 13.77.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.84% or 10.90 to $1302.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 0.26% or 0.15 to hit $56.94 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.17% or 0.11 to trade at $66.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.44% to 1.1297, while USD/JPY rose 0.09% to 111.28.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.27% at 96.912.
