Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.10%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which rose 9.82% or 0.220 points to trade at 2.460 at the close. MAG Silver Corp . (TO:MAG) added 3.96% or 0.66 points to end at 17.34 and Alaris Royalty Corp . (TO:AD) was up 3.07% or 0.660 points to 22.140 in late trade.
Biggest losers included First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which lost 7.24% or 1.14 points to trade at 14.60 in late trade. Surge Energy Inc . (TO:SGY) declined 7.01% or 0.190 points to end at 2.520 and Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE) shed 5.68% or 0.210 points to 3.490.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 601 to 561 and 144 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 1.96% to 15.02.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.32% or 3.80 to $1187.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.84% or 1.81 to hit $45.27 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.78% or 1.86 to trade at $47.35 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.20% to 0.7442, while CAD/EUR fell 0.54% to 0.6986.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.24% at 100.97.
