Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.50%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.21%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 0.89% or 0.59 points to trade at 66.62 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.75% or 1.21 points to end at 162.28 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.43% or 0.48 points to 113.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 1.98% or 3.47 points to trade at 171.57 in late trade. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 1.39% or 0.94 points to end at 66.90 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 1.20% or 0.62 points to 51.26.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hartford Financial Services Group (NYSE:HIG) which rose 3.04% to 43.79, Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was up 2.99% to settle at 72.63 and Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which gained 2.73% to close at 77.79.
The worst performers were Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) which was down 10.11% to 34.25 in late trade, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which lost 4.54% to settle at 16.61 and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc (NYSE:DPS) which was down 4.30% to 86.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which rose 65.90% to 14.35, Kelly Services B Inc (NASDAQ:KELYB) which was up 54.36% to settle at 27.800 and Spanish Broadcasting System Inc (NASDAQ:SBSA) which gained 26.29% to close at 4.900.
The worst performers were Trinity Biotech plc (NASDAQ:TRIB) which was down 50.27% to 6.46 in late trade, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which lost 48.61% to settle at 0.7400 and Vanguard Natural Resources LLC (NASDAQ:VNR) which was down 38.61% to 0.517 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2288 to 869 and 76 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1479 fell and 1036 advanced, while 104 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.52% to 13.64.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 3.14% or 41.25 to $1271.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.37% or 0.18 to hit $48.63 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.10% or 0.05 to trade at $50.84 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.06% to 1.1204, while USD/JPY rose 1.21% to 102.87.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.46% at 96.09.
