Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.24%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.41%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.89%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 1.81% or 2.28 points to trade at 128.16 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 1.18% or 1.09 points to end at 93.77 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.14% or 3.94 points to 348.45 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 1.75% or 2.69 points to trade at 150.65 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 1.72% or 2.79 points to end at 159.80 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 1.71% or 3.96 points to 228.17.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which rose 49.88% to 377.82, IDEXX Laboratories Inc (NASDAQ:IDXX) which was up 9.80% to settle at 394.93 and Hologic Inc (NASDAQ:HOLX) which gained 9.34% to close at 74.13.
The worst performers were Catalent Inc (NYSE:CTLT) which was down 24.62% to 49.55 in late trade, Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ:ZBRA) which lost 15.86% to settle at 238.30 and Ecolab Inc (NYSE:ECL) which was down 8.98% to 142.96 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ABIOMED Inc (NASDAQ:ABMD) which rose 49.88% to 377.82, Sonnet Biotherapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:SONN) which was up 46.63% to settle at 2.83 and NLS Pharmaceutics AG (NASDAQ:NLSP) which gained 44.00% to close at 0.74.
The worst performers were Varonis Systems (NASDAQ:VRNS) which was down 35.49% to 17.27 in late trade, China Liberal Education Holdings (NASDAQ:CLEU) which lost 27.39% to settle at 1.14 and Acorda Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ACOR) which was down 25.22% to 0.80 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1960 to 1172 and 95 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2101 rose and 1680 declined, while 194 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.27% to 25.81.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.55% or 8.95 to $1,649.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.02% or 1.75 to hit $88.28 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 1.81% or 1.68 to trade at $94.49 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.99, while USD/JPY fell 0.33% to 148.23.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.02% at 111.44.
