Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.03%, while the S&P 500 index declined 1.44%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.00%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which rose 0.80% or 4.28 points to trade at 539.32 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.69% or 1.29 points to end at 188.50 and Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was up 0.13% or 0.19 points to 149.28 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which lost 3.79% or 3.64 points to trade at 92.29 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.60% or 6.67 points to end at 178.43 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 2.58% or 4.55 points to 172.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which rose 5.25% to 73.57, Lumen Technologies Inc (NYSE:LUMN) which was up 3.85% to settle at 5.40 and Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ:EXC) which gained 2.68% to close at 42.87.
The worst performers were NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 15.08% to 34.68 in late trade, Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which lost 7.77% to settle at 309.73 and Paramount Global Class B (NASDAQ:PARA) which was down 6.97% to 18.15 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:SMMT) which rose 194.27% to 2.31, Pacifico Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:PAFO) which was up 59.01% to settle at 8.03 and Eterna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ERNA) which gained 43.87% to close at 4.46.
The worst performers were Gossamer Bio Inc (NASDAQ:GOSS) which was down 74.60% to 2.36 in late trade, INVO Bioscience Inc (NASDAQ:INVO) which lost 35.62% to settle at 0.47 and MEI Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:MEIP) which was down 33.52% to 0.26 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2177 to 902 and 129 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2618 fell and 1097 advanced, while 220 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.84% to 22.17.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.15% or 2.65 to $1,783.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January fell 3.46% or 2.66 to hit $74.27 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 3.86% or 3.19 to trade at $79.49 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.24% to 1.05, while USD/JPY rose 0.22% to 137.04.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 105.53.
