Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Consumer Goods and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Healthcare and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.04%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 2.26% or 1.64 points to trade at 74.15 at the close. Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 1.48% or 1.38 points to end at 94.69 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 1.31% or 0.60 points to 46.48 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Visa Inc (NYSE:V), which lost 2.39% or 3.47 points to trade at 141.89 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 1.27% or 0.61 points to end at 47.52 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 1.14% or 1.28 points to 110.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which rose 7.14% to 23.40, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was up 4.24% to settle at 4.670 and H&R Block Inc (NYSE:HRB) which gained 4.21% to close at 26.51.
The worst performers were Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) which was down 4.14% to 148.65 in late trade, Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which lost 4.07% to settle at 182.95 and Intuitive Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:ISRG) which was down 4.05% to 526.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were China Lending Corp (NASDAQ:CLDC) which rose 61.25% to 1.29, Pacific Ethanol Inc (NASDAQ:PEIX) which was up 43.09% to settle at 2.690 and Auris Medical Holding AG (NASDAQ:EARS) which gained 36.17% to close at 0.640.
The worst performers were Menlo Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MNLO) which was down 39.57% to 6.14 in late trade, Altimmune Inc (NASDAQ:ALT) which lost 31.77% to settle at 4.940 and Dogness International Corp Class A (NASDAQ:DOGZ) which was down 22.13% to 1.79 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1556 to 1515 and 92 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1544 fell and 1075 advanced, while 80 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.68% to 15.81 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.16% or 14.00 to $1191.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.12% or 0.09 to hit $74.25 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.33% or 0.28 to trade at $83.88 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.26% to 1.1494, while USD/JPY fell 0.51% to 113.14.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.10% at 95.41.
