Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Financials, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.21%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.18%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.08%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.68% or 3.62 points to trade at 219.64 at the close. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 1.31% or 1.34 points to end at 103.63 and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) was up 1.25% or 1.06 points to 85.76 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 0.72% or 1.13 points to trade at 154.83 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.57% or 0.61 points to end at 107.02 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 0.40% or 0.61 points to 152.03.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Agilent Technologies Inc (NYSE:A) which rose 4.60% to 58.66, Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) which was up 3.71% to settle at 43.04 and Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) which gained 3.31% to close at 58.64.
The worst performers were AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which was down 11.84% to 581.40 in late trade, Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALXN) which lost 9.34% to settle at 104.64 and Brown Forman (NYSE:BFb) which was down 6.22% to 53.38 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which rose 55.51% to 3.810, Global Sources Ltd (NASDAQ:GSOL) which was up 48.96% to settle at 17.88 and Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which gained 33.33% to close at 0.240.
The worst performers were Cerus Corporation (NASDAQ:CERS) which was down 25.00% to 2.250 in late trade, Cumulus Media Inc (NASDAQ:CMLS) which lost 23.90% to settle at 0.4642 and OpGen Inc (NASDAQ:OPGN) which was down 18.18% to 0.540 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1865 to 1347 and 47 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1288 rose and 1187 declined, while 143 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.10% to 10.70.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.80% or 10.13 to $1251.27 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 0.82% or 0.42 to hit $51.55 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.69% or 0.37 to trade at $54.24 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.49% to 1.1182, while USD/JPY rose 0.43% to 111.78.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.40% at 97.27.
