Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.02%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.05%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.00%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.87% or 0.81 points to trade at 29.07 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 2.29% or 3.85 points to end at 171.82 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.99% or 4.94 points to 252.75 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 3.08% or 5.89 points to trade at 185.23 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 2.37% or 5.99 points to end at 246.41 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.53% or 2.66 points to 171.36.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which rose 12.63% to 84.64, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc (NASDAQ:ODFL) which was up 10.32% to settle at 367.62 and Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) which gained 9.91% to close at 278.95.
The worst performers were WestRock Co (NYSE:WRK) which was down 12.67% to 34.27 in late trade, Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) which lost 9.26% to settle at 116.76 and Chubb Ltd (NYSE:CB) which was down 6.18% to 213.44 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Versus Systems Inc (NASDAQ:VS) which rose 172.09% to 1.66, Bright Green Corp (NASDAQ:BGXX) which was up 171.77% to settle at 1.42 and Golden Sun Education Group Ltd (NASDAQ:GSUN) which gained 125.66% to close at 3.43.
The worst performers were Cyren Ltd (NASDAQ:CYRN) which was down 37.84% to 0.46 in late trade, Taysha Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:TSHA) which lost 26.22% to settle at 1.21 and Evelo Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:EVLO) which was down 25.11% to 0.78 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2189 to 866 and 117 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2463 rose and 1196 declined, while 211 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.84% to 17.88 a new 52-week low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.11% or 21.50 to $1,966.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 2.59% or 2.04 to hit $76.83 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 2.70% or 2.31 to trade at $83.15 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.12% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.82% to 129.02.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.90% at 101.00.
