Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.67%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 1.55% or 1.65 points to trade at 107.89 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.53% or 0.58 points to end at 38.59 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.46% or 0.49 points to 33.94 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 2.55% or 0.56 points to trade at 21.43 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 2.06% or 3.45 points to end at 163.76 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 0.90% or 0.88 points to 96.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 10.09% to 273.58, CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was up 4.42% to settle at 68.75 and Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) which gained 3.90% to close at 110.28.
The worst performers were Rtx Corp (NYSE:RTX) which was down 7.87% to 76.91 in late trade, JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which lost 7.01% to settle at 131.66 and Newell Brands Inc (NASDAQ:NWL) which was down 6.04% to 9.34 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (NASDAQ:CGC) which rose 81.37% to 1.69, Aurora Cannabis Inc (NASDAQ:ACB) which was up 72.17% to settle at 0.91 and Crinetics Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:CRNX) which gained 63.31% to close at 26.08.
The worst performers were SigmaTron International Inc (NASDAQ:SGMA) which was down 46.84% to 4.04 in late trade, Tenon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:TNON) which lost 42.71% to settle at 0.14 and Solowin Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:SWIN) which was down 33.20% to 3.28 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1601 to 1289 and 108 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1772 fell and 1711 advanced, while 135 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.29% to 13.80.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.14% or 2.75 to $1,945.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.26% or 0.23 to hit $87.28 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 0.07% or 0.06 to trade at $90.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.49% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.87% to 146.52.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.52% at 104.16.
