U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.51%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.51% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.99%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.36%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.91% or 3.03 points to trade at 161.41 at the close. Salesforce.com Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 1.59% or 2.90 points to end at 185.35 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 1.58% or 5.09 points to 326.54 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 2.87% or 1.41 points to trade at 47.66 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.19% or 1.15 points to end at 51.40 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.57% or 2.03 points to 127.15.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 9.78% to 815.12, Nucor Corp (NYSE:NUE) which was up 9.15% to settle at 128.52 and Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) which gained 9.07% to close at 279.23.

The worst performers were Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which was down 11.18% to 9.85 in late trade, United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which lost 10.17% to settle at 37.44 and Pool Corporation (NASDAQ:POOL) which was down 10.13% to 356.57 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Addex Therapeutics Ltd (NASDAQ:ADXN) which rose 110.40% to 1.93, 1Life Healthcare Inc (NASDAQ:ONEM) which was up 69.45% to settle at 17.25 and Tabula Rasa HealthCare Inc (NASDAQ:TRHC) which gained 56.54% to close at 4.07.

The worst performers were LumiraDx Ltd (NASDAQ:LMDX) which was down 36.97% to 1.33 in late trade, NLS Pharmaceutics AG (NASDAQ:NLSP) which lost 31.08% to settle at 0.41 and Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc (NASDAQ:FFIE) which was down 26.51% to 3.41 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1911 to 1189 and 169 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2210 rose and 1500 declined, while 247 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.22% to 23.11 a new 3-month low.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.09% or 18.60 to $1,718.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 3.60% or 3.60 to hit $96.28 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.88% or 3.08 to trade at $103.84 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 1.02, while USD/JPY fell 0.56% to 137.43.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.40% at 106.52.
