Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.66% to hit a new all time high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.80% or 1.52 points to trade at 55.80 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 2.37% or 5.94 points to end at 256.46 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) was up 2.23% or 4.87 points to 223.29 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 1.38% or 0.82 points to trade at 58.67 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) declined 0.97% or 0.51 points to end at 52.29 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) shed 0.91% or 0.34 points to 36.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ralph Lauren Corp Class A (NYSE:RL) which rose 14.66% to 115.67, Discovery Inc Class A (NASDAQ:DISCA) which was up 12.06% to settle at 31.03 and CenturyLink Inc (NYSE:CTL) which gained 11.38% to close at 14.88.
The worst performers were Expedia Inc (NASDAQ:EXPE) which was down 27.39% to 98.29 in late trade, TripAdvisor Inc (NASDAQ:TRIP) which lost 22.41% to settle at 31.65 and Booking Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:BKNG) which was down 8.06% to 1849.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RAPT Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RAPT) which rose 48.47% to 22.27, Urban Tea Inc (NASDAQ:MYT) which was up 38.78% to settle at 0.6800 and B Communications Ltd (NASDAQ:BCOM) which gained 36.99% to close at 1.69.
The worst performers were ObsEva SA (NASDAQ:OBSV) which was down 64.63% to 2.81 in late trade, Allena Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ALNA) which lost 61.71% to settle at 2.24 and Cool Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:AWSM) which was down 59.93% to 0.119 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1495 to 1366 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1365 rose and 1286 declined, while 86 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 0.87% to 12.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.59% or 23.80 to $1469.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 1.30% or 0.73 to hit $57.08 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.92% or 0.57 to trade at $62.31 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.00% to 1.1050, while USD/JPY rose 0.04% to 109.31.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.21% at 97.972.
