Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.02% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.56%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which rose 5.55% or 15.37 points to trade at 292.39 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) added 2.86% or 4.71 points to end at 169.62 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 2.19% or 3.22 points to 150.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 0.78% or 0.30 points to trade at 38.29 in late trade. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) declined 0.53% or 0.53 points to end at 99.90 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.15% or 0.27 points to 185.34.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SolarEdge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SEDG) which rose 19.13% to 251.73, Expeditors International of Washington Inc (NASDAQ:EXPD) which was up 9.06% to settle at 104.40 and Welltower Inc (NYSE:WELL) which gained 8.22% to close at 66.51.
The worst performers were Take-Two Interactive Software Inc (NASDAQ:TTWO) which was down 13.68% to 93.57 in late trade, Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT) which lost 6.25% to settle at 80.19 and International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 4.96% to 91.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Taskus Inc (NASDAQ:TASK) which rose 37.22% to 22.01, GrowGeneration Corp (NASDAQ:GRWG) which was up 35.05% to settle at 4.47 and Skywater Technology Inc (NASDAQ:SKYT) which gained 31.60% to close at 11.37.
The worst performers were Bioventus Inc (NASDAQ:BVS) which was down 57.51% to 3.00 in late trade, R1 RCM Inc (NASDAQ:RCM) which lost 49.76% to settle at 7.41 and Athersys Inc (NASDAQ:ATHX) which was down 43.36% to 1.28 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1836 to 1264 and 129 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1898 fell and 1766 advanced, while 261 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.89% to 25.54.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 2.15% or 36.20 to $1,716.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 2.82% or 2.59 to hit $89.20 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.38% or 2.33 to trade at $95.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.56% to 1.01, while USD/JPY fell 0.73% to 145.55.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.46% at 109.49.
