Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.07% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.63%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which rose 4.22% or 3.71 points to trade at 91.72 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 3.81% or 5.39 points to end at 147.02 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 3.24% or 4.60 points to 146.65 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 2.06% or 3.70 points to trade at 176.09 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) declined 0.51% or 1.33 points to end at 259.99 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 0.25% or 1.38 points to 540.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC) which rose 10.32% to 83.63, IQVIA Holdings Inc (NYSE:IQV) which was up 10.07% to settle at 197.65 and Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) which gained 9.10% to close at 219.12.
The worst performers were Brown & Brown Inc (NYSE:BRO) which was down 12.65% to 55.10 in late trade, Cadence Design Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CDNS) which lost 5.55% to settle at 151.32 and W. R. Berkley Corp (NYSE:WRB) which was down 4.82% to 69.07 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Taysha Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:TSHA) which rose 97.35% to 2.98, Fangdd Network Group Ltd (NASDAQ:DUO) which was up 89.64% to settle at 1.26 and Revelation Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:REVB) which gained 64.60% to close at 0.41.
The worst performers were Hoth Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:HOTH) which was down 26.37% to 0.24 in late trade, Mana Capital Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MAAQ) which lost 23.24% to settle at 5.99 and TuanChe ADR (NASDAQ:TC) which was down 18.45% to 6.32 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2635 to 482 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2992 rose and 750 declined, while 243 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.66% to 28.46 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.21% or 3.55 to $1,657.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.39% or 0.33 to hit $84.91 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 0.05% or 0.05 to trade at $91.16 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.94% to 1.00, while USD/JPY fell 0.71% to 147.90.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.03% at 110.76.
