Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.80%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.61%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 4.73% or 5.79 points to trade at 128.30 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 2.49% or 3.83 points to end at 157.50 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was up 1.18% or 0.43 points to 37.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which lost 2.19% or 6.03 points to trade at 269.46 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 2.10% or 3.87 points to end at 180.54 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 1.96% or 1.74 points to 86.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Lam Research Corp (NASDAQ:LRCX) which rose 7.81% to 355.87, AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) which was up 7.72% to settle at 16.74 and Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) which gained 6.32% to close at 134.66.
The worst performers were Allstate Corp (NYSE:ALL) which was down 12.90% to 117.71 in late trade, Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) which lost 6.80% to settle at 186.45 and Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 6.65% to 207.28 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nextplay Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:NXTP) which rose 107.31% to 0.41, Cabaletta Bio Inc (NASDAQ:CABA) which was up 50.77% to settle at 1.96 and Save Foods Inc (NASDAQ:SVFD) which gained 31.33% to close at 1.97.
The worst performers were Talaris Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TALS) which was down 43.39% to 1.37 in late trade, LMF Acquisition Opportunities Inc (NASDAQ:LMAO) which lost 34.55% to settle at 6.82 and Gaucho Group Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:VINO) which was down 30.40% to 0.21 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2063 to 1025 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2040 fell and 1693 advanced, while 238 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.54% to 29.98.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.17% or 2.85 to $1,631.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.50% or 0.42 to hit $84.94 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.26% or 0.24 to trade at $92.65 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 0.98, while USD/JPY rose 0.19% to 150.18.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 112.80.
