Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Telecoms, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.43%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.93%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.87%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were American Express Company (NYSE:AXP), which rose 1.88% or 2.83 points to trade at 153.01 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.60% or 2.25 points to end at 143.02 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.87% or 1.10 points to 128.25 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 6.74% or 3.21 points to trade at 44.45 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.47% or 1.41 points to end at 39.20 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) shed 2.24% or 2.50 points to 109.12.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were HCA Holdings Inc (NYSE:HCA) which rose 11.43% to 202.03, Schlumberger NV (NYSE:SLB) which was up 4.28% to settle at 35.07 and PPG Industries Inc (NYSE:PPG) which gained 3.89% to close at 127.73.
The worst performers were SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB) which was down 17.15% to 361.36 in late trade, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which lost 8.11% to settle at 76.83 and Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) which was down 7.59% to 169.27 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Pagaya (NASDAQ:PGY) which rose 118.88% to 11.71, Kidpik Corp (NASDAQ:PIK) which was up 67.57% to settle at 2.48 and Yoshitsu Co Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:TKLF) which gained 48.39% to close at 2.30.
The worst performers were VistaGen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VTGN) which was down 85.99% to 0.15 in late trade, Meihua International Medical Technologies Co Ltd (NASDAQ:MHUA) which lost 40.55% to settle at 2.88 and Kiora Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:KPRX) which was down 39.76% to 0.15 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1965 to 1173 and 148 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2754 fell and 999 advanced, while 217 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.35% to 23.03 a new 3-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.53% or 9.10 to $1,722.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.72% or 1.66 to hit $94.69 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.58% or 0.60 to trade at $103.26 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.18% to 1.02, while USD/JPY fell 0.96% to 136.05.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.33% at 106.45.
