Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Financials, Consumer Goods and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.63%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.89%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.12%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 2.44% or 2.39 points to trade at 100.35 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 1.57% or 2.66 points to end at 171.91 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 0.91% or 1.86 points to 206.86 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 2.94% or 4.19 points to trade at 138.39 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.55% or 8.02 points to end at 306.92 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.25% or 5.56 points to 241.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which rose 5.21% to 107.76, PENN Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:PENN) which was up 4.59% to settle at 37.63 and Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which gained 4.57% to close at 179.03.
The worst performers were Hasbro Inc (NASDAQ:HAS) which was down 9.86% to 57.16 in late trade, Bath & Body Works Inc. (NYSE:BBWI) which lost 8.17% to settle at 33.06 and SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB) which was down 6.73% to 219.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Opiant Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:OPNT) which rose 111.58% to 20.10, Freight Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:FRGT) which was up 113.15% to settle at 0.44 and Toughbuilt Industries Inc (NASDAQ:TBLT) which gained 72.27% to close at 3.79.
The worst performers were Satsuma Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:STSA) which was down 83.22% to 0.68 in late trade, Sellas Life Sciences Group Inc (NASDAQ:SLS) which lost 43.96% to settle at 2.55 and Nuwellis Inc (NASDAQ:NUWE) which was down 40.00% to 0.12 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2196 to 958 and 105 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2268 fell and 1525 advanced, while 242 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.37% to 23.73.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.30% or 5.30 to $1,774.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 4.24% or 3.77 to hit $85.19 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 3.57% or 3.43 to trade at $92.56 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.21% to 1.03, while USD/JPY rose 0.77% to 139.87.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.53% at 106.72.
