Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Industrials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.15%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.19% or 1.04 points to trade at 48.50 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 1.03% or 1.25 points to end at 122.57 and Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) was up 0.73% or 0.61 points to 83.61 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 3.84% or 13.62 points to trade at 341.12 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 3.62% or 5.38 points to end at 143.30 and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) shed 2.34% or 4.78 points to 199.39.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which rose 4.59% to 99.60, CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was up 4.47% to settle at 70.77 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which gained 3.73% to close at 404.98.
The worst performers were MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) which was down 4.50% to 29.91 in late trade, Xylem Inc (NYSE:XYL) which lost 3.88% to settle at 68.81 and General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) which was down 3.85% to 42.26 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Astrotech Corp (NASDAQ:ASTC) which rose 226.15% to 6.360, Caladrius Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:CLBS) which was up 67.34% to settle at 6.6100 and Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which gained 53.54% to close at 19.5000.
The worst performers were PTC Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:PTCT) which was down 30.58% to 33.24 in late trade, Tintri Inc (NASDAQ:TNTR) which lost 25.39% to settle at 0.19 and Clean Diesel Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:CDTI) which was down 20.29% to 0.5500 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1765 to 1279 and 138 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1404 fell and 1143 advanced, while 119 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 8.94% to 13.41.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.17% or 2.20 to $1277.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 1.17% or 0.77 to hit $64.92 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.29% or 0.22 to trade at $75.12 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.26% to 1.1593, while USD/JPY fell 0.47% to 110.03.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.22% at 94.62.
