Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.49%, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 2.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which rose 4.72% or 4.35 points to trade at 96.51 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 0.98% or 1.58 points to end at 163.24 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was down 0.18% or 0.48 points to 273.07 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 4.33% or 15.14 points to trade at 334.66 in late trade. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) declined 3.29% or 5.96 points to end at 175.00 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 3.25% or 5.63 points to 167.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which rose 6.56% to 140.26, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) which was up 6.02% to settle at 781.56 and Trane Technologies plc (NYSE:TT) which gained 5.48% to close at 317.36.
The worst performers were GE HealthCare Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:GEHC) which was down 14.28% to 76.24 in late trade, Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which lost 9.86% to settle at 57.29 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 9.69% to 7.36 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Canopy Growth Corp (NASDAQ:CGC) which rose 78.85% to 14.88, Akili Inc (NASDAQ:AKLI) which was up 70.29% to settle at 0.40 and Visionary Education Technology Holdings Group Inc (NASDAQ:GV) which gained 60.00% to close at 0.26.
The worst performers were Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which was down 35.96% to 1.14 in late trade, Lichen China Ltd (NASDAQ:LICN) which lost 32.02% to settle at 1.38 and Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BCLI) which was down 30.04% to 0.38 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2373 to 497 and 56 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2356 fell and 1021 advanced, while 103 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.68% to 15.65.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 2.36% or 55.65 to $2,302.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.27% or 1.05 to hit $81.58 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 1.40% or 1.22 to trade at $85.98 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.46% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.95% to 157.81.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.69% at 106.18.
