Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.32%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.15%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 5.15% or 9.80 points to trade at 200.09 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.91% or 0.70 points to end at 77.61 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 0.85% or 0.41 points to 48.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 3.45% or 4.96 points to trade at 138.84 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 2.05% or 4.36 points to end at 207.96 and Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) shed 1.58% or 1.07 points to 66.55.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) which rose 5.15% to 200.09, Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which was up 4.73% to settle at 70.17 and Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which gained 2.98% to close at 323.55.
The worst performers were Hanesbrands Inc (NYSE:HBI) which was down 19.11% to 18.00 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 7.10% to settle at 4.385 and MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) which was down 6.98% to 29.18 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nortech Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:NSYS) which rose 34.60% to 4.415, Rxi Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:RXII) which was up 26.77% to settle at 1.8762 and Egalet Corp (NASDAQ:EGLT) which gained 28.28% to close at 0.37.
The worst performers were Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc (NASDAQ:HMNY) which was down 46.33% to 0.266 in late trade, InnerWorkings Inc (NASDAQ:INWK) which lost 24.38% to settle at 6.70 and JMU Ltd (NASDAQ:JMU) which was down 24.08% to 1.450 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2069 to 915 and 48 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1450 fell and 1044 advanced, while 118 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.04% to 13.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.49% or 6.00 to $1217.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.51% or 1.04 to hit $67.72 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 2.05% or 1.52 to trade at $72.69 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.22% to 1.1666, while USD/JPY fell 0.13% to 111.73.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.14% at 94.46.
