Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Utilities and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.01%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.16%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.59%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW), which rose 2.32% or 1.15 points to trade at 50.65 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 2.35% or 3.55 points to end at 154.42 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.03% or 3.49 points to 175.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 2.11% or 3.05 points to trade at 141.17 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 1.31% or 2.01 points to end at 151.68 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) shed 1.04% or 2.20 points to 209.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Under Armour Inc A (NYSE:UAA) which rose 4.79% to 9.84, Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) which was up 4.74% to settle at 105.55 and Ralph Lauren Corp Class A (NYSE:RL) which gained 4.36% to close at 112.66.
The worst performers were Illumina Inc (NASDAQ:ILMN) which was down 3.84% to 208.57 in late trade, PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) which lost 2.87% to settle at 77.64 and Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which was down 2.83% to 303.39 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Otonomy Inc (NASDAQ:OTIC) which rose 113.82% to 0.23, Apollo Endosurgery Inc (NASDAQ:APEN) which was up 67.83% to settle at 10.07 and OncoSec Medical Inc (NASDAQ:ONCS) which gained 50.98% to close at 3.85.
The worst performers were Digital Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:DBGI) which was down 34.17% to 4.74 in late trade, Eqonex Ltd (NASDAQ:EQOS) which lost 33.88% to settle at 0.09 and Secoo Holding Ltd (NASDAQ:SECO) which was down 32.49% to 1.60 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1865 to 1240 and 114 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1884 fell and 1866 advanced, while 211 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.44% to 21.89.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.47% or 8.15 to $1,748.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.92% or 1.48 to hit $78.72 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.97% or 0.81 to trade at $84.70 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 1.03, while USD/JPY fell 0.17% to 138.70.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.11% at 106.75.
