Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Friday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Telecoms and Industrials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.20%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.08%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.09%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM), which rose 1.26% or 1.09 points to trade at 87.81 at the close. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) added 0.71% or 0.72 points to end at 102.12 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.59% or 0.26 points to 44.01 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 1.93% or 1.33 points to trade at 67.66 in late trade. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 0.99% or 1.62 points to end at 161.91 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 0.96% or 0.94 points to 96.83.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Nordstrom Inc (NYSE:JWN) which rose 7.99% to 51.36, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 5.59% to settle at 63.04 and Cigna Corporation (NYSE:CI) which gained 5.29% to close at 133.32.
The worst performers were Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 4.58% to 9.89 in late trade, Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which lost 3.31% to settle at 27.18 and Nucor Corporation (NYSE:NUE) which was down 3.17% to 50.69 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Acacia Communications Inc (NASDAQ:ACIA) which rose 41.31% to 95.67, Aoxin Tianli Group Inc (NASDAQ:ABAC) which was up 31.32% to settle at 0.8800 and Silicon Graphics International (NASDAQ:SGI) which gained 28.60% to close at 7.69.
The worst performers were Ocean Rig UDW Inc (NASDAQ:ORIG) which was down 61.57% to 0.83 in late trade, Concordia International Corp (NASDAQ:CXRX) which lost 38.08% to settle at 10.13 and Vestin Realty Mortgage II Inc (NASDAQ:VRTB) which was down 19.55% to 1.770 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1649 to 1499 and 90 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1263 fell and 1208 advanced, while 139 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.03% to 11.56.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.67% or 9.05 to $1340.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.69% or 1.17 to hit $44.66 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 2.37% or 1.09 to trade at $47.13 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.20% to 1.1160, while USD/JPY fell 0.69% to 101.26.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.20% at 95.71.
