Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Monday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Financials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Healthcare and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.07%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.29%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which rose 1.50% or 3.25 points to trade at 220.44 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 1.16% or 1.21 points to end at 105.57 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) was up 0.90% or 0.74 points to 82.96 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 1.11% or 2.25 points to trade at 199.98 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 0.95% or 0.68 points to end at 70.53 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 0.82% or 0.86 points to 104.14.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) which rose 4.08% to 30.09, EQT Corporation (NYSE:EQT) which was up 3.84% to settle at 58.35 and CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which gained 3.50% to close at 80.12.
The worst performers were Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which was down 6.56% to 1.14 in late trade, Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which lost 5.99% to settle at 24.01 and Qorvo Inc (NASDAQ:QRVO) which was down 5.05% to 66.41 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were AVEO Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:AVEO) which rose 56.00% to 1.9500, Marathon Patent Group Inc (NASDAQ:MARA) which was up 51.94% to settle at 0.509 and ITUS Corp (NASDAQ:ITUS) which gained 40.54% to close at 1.040.
The worst performers were Neothetics Inc (NASDAQ:NEOT) which was down 69.61% to 0.71 in late trade, HealthStream Inc (NASDAQ:HSTM) which lost 16.90% to settle at 25.67 and Oncobiologics Inc (NASDAQ:ONS) which was down 15.60% to 1.03 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1985 to 1143 and 134 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1282 rose and 1194 declined, while 146 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.40% to 9.88.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.92% or 11.55 to $1244.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.93% or 0.40 to hit $43.41 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.72% or 0.33 to trade at $46.08 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.12% to 1.1182, while USD/JPY rose 0.52% to 111.87.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.13% at 97.11.
