Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.28%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.10%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.01%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 1.74% or 2.41 points to trade at 141.28 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.64% or 2.79 points to end at 172.67 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 1.45% or 1.24 points to 87.02 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.31% or 0.35 points to trade at 26.44 in late trade. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) declined 1.08% or 1.32 points to end at 120.81 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 0.78% or 2.49 points to 314.84.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which rose 5.94% to 201.16, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 4.43% to settle at 47.62 and Schlumberger NV (NYSE:SLB) which gained 3.87% to close at 51.76.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 8.05% to 137.80 in late trade, FactSet Research Systems Inc (NYSE:FDS) which lost 5.39% to settle at 397.28 and General Mills Inc (NYSE:GIS) which was down 4.58% to 83.13 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Icecure Medical Ltd (NASDAQ:ICCM) which rose 177.60% to 2.60, Erayak Power Solution Group Inc (NASDAQ:RAYA) which was up 47.54% to settle at 2.70 and E-Home Household Service Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EJH) which gained 39.93% to close at 0.53.
The worst performers were Magenta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MGTA) which was down 52.71% to 0.39 in late trade, Pingtan Marine Enterprise Ltd (NASDAQ:PME) which lost 43.95% to settle at 0.33 and Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which was down 39.36% to 6.07 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1686 to 1417 and 111 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1939 rose and 1787 declined, while 208 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.19% to 21.48.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.70% or 30.65 to $1,828.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.74% or 0.56 to hit $75.94 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.10% or 0.08 to trade at $79.72 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.18% to 1.06, while USD/JPY fell 3.81% to 131.66.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.71% at 103.61.
