Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.37%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.07%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which rose 4.29% or 0.95 points to trade at 23.11 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 2.94% or 2.93 points to end at 102.61 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 2.74% or 2.65 points to 99.30 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 1.83% or 5.90 points to trade at 316.07 in late trade. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) declined 0.80% or 2.31 points to end at 285.80 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.68% or 0.28 points to 41.10.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were GE HealthCare Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:GEHC) which rose 11.65% to 81.96, Dupont De Nemours Inc (NYSE:DD) which was up 7.34% to settle at 65.70 and Willis Towers Watson PLC (NASDAQ:WTW) which gained 7.18% to close at 268.45.
The worst performers were FMC Corporation (NYSE:FMC) which was down 11.55% to 53.44 in late trade, Charter Communications Inc (NASDAQ:CHTR) which lost 4.40% to settle at 290.28 and Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which was down 3.71% to 607.14 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:NVIV) which rose 136.94% to 0.53, Medavail Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MDVL) which was up 92.40% to settle at 3.29 and ADDvantage Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ:AEY) which gained 77.14% to close at 0.62.
The worst performers were Sunworks Inc (NASDAQ:SUNW) which was down 58.37% to 0.09 in late trade, BioRestorative Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:BRTX) which lost 54.49% to settle at 1.57 and Peraso Inc (NASDAQ:PRSO) which was down 42.62% to 1.75 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2056 to 821 and 60 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2166 rose and 1257 declined, while 105 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.46% to 13.06.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.44% or 8.95 to $2,051.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.95% or 0.69 to hit $73.47 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.88% or 0.69 to trade at $78.68 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.52% to 147.90.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.28% at 104.03.
