Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.35%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.37%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.80%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.08% or 1.18 points to trade at 110.47 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.59% or 1.26 points to end at 215.95 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was up 0.27% or 0.75 points to 275.81 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which lost 4.77% or 1.08 points to trade at 21.55 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 3.55% or 13.92 points to end at 378.72 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) shed 2.94% or 1.61 points to 53.18.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Ecolab Inc (NYSE:ECL) which rose 8.97% to 221.18, Waste Management Inc (NYSE:WM) which was up 5.94% to settle at 199.44 and Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which gained 5.88% to close at 121.30.
The worst performers were Moodys Corporation (NYSE:MCO) which was down 8.06% to 368.76 in late trade, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which lost 7.39% to settle at 226.65 and Invesco Plc (NYSE:IVZ) which was down 6.90% to 15.24 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were BioNexus Gene Lab Corp (NASDAQ:BGLC) which rose 282.00% to 1.57, Digital Brands Group Inc (NASDAQ:DBGI) which was up 139.09% to settle at 6.85 and Fibrobiologics Inc (NASDAQ:FBLG) which gained 88.38% to close at 13.94.
The worst performers were Sientra Inc (NASDAQ:SIEN) which was down 65.13% to 0.20 in late trade, Sunshine Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:SBFM) which lost 63.81% to settle at 0.07 and BIOLASE Inc (NASDAQ:BIOL) which was down 63.18% to 0.17 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2600 to 300 and 33 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2832 fell and 614 advanced, while 89 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 13.78% to 15.85 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was down 1.32% or 26.80 to $2,006.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.16% or 0.89 to hit $77.81 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract rose 0.77% or 0.63 to trade at $82.63 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.58% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.98% to 150.80.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.69% at 104.77.
