Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Telecoms, Basic Materials and Consumer Services sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.14%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.20%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 1.94% or 5.22 points to trade at 274.11 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.65% or 2.93 points to end at 180.49 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) was up 0.88% or 1.18 points to 135.94 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), which lost 6.44% or 24.08 points to trade at 349.92 in late trade. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 4.60% or 8.92 points to end at 185.00 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 2.41% or 1.01 points to 40.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 7.43% to 131.49, Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) which was up 5.91% to settle at 97.08 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which gained 4.75% to close at 177.02.
The worst performers were Emerson Electric Company (NYSE:EMR) which was down 6.82% to 91.24 in late trade, Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) which lost 6.44% to settle at 349.92 and Mohawk Industries Inc (NYSE:MHK) which was down 6.30% to 111.18 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Celyad SA (NASDAQ:CYAD) which rose 137.80% to 1.90, Calyxt Inc (NASDAQ:CLXT) which was up 90.25% to settle at 0.35 and Avenue Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:ATXI) which gained 63.11% to close at 1.99.
The worst performers were Viveve Medical Inc (NASDAQ:VIVE) which was down 69.77% to 0.26 in late trade, Edesa Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:EDSA) which lost 42.06% to settle at 1.46 and Angion Biomedica Corp (NASDAQ:ANGN) which was down 30.88% to 0.70 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1596 to 1474 and 101 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1961 rose and 1776 declined, while 166 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.67% to 19.36.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.54% or 10.30 to $1,911.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.42% or 1.14 to hit $81.25 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 2.57% or 2.17 to trade at $86.63 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.23% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.28% to 128.18.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.18% at 102.13.
